Using dreams and visions to gain insight into solutions to problems has been part of the traditional role of the shaman for as long as they have been around and they occur in all societies, although their specific role form differs with the society and they may be male or female in different societies. Remember the fairy tales with 'wise women' in them or perhaps even a witch.
